From congressional races through to the presidential contest, aspiring and established politicos ran on platforms emphasizing honesty and integrity.

To celebrate their victories, the 115th Congress votedwithout warning, support from GOP leadership, or bipartisan discussion—to curtail the investigative and oversight responsibilities of an independent ethics office—which was set up by Congress itself 2008—in the aftermath of several corruption scandals that sent three members of Congress to jail.

Even though Congress reversed course less than 24 hours later, the tone-deaf hubris that led to this decision is not normal.
