Yesterday, the people of France rejected right-wing, intolerant, and fear-based populism in favor of real people-focused and forward-looking populism. France’s next president will be the centrist and optimist, Emmanuel Macron.
His opponent in the general election, Marine Le Pen, conceded defeat by snidely telling her supporters that the French people had “chosen continuity.”
To deride hope, optimism, and tolerance in this way is not normal, and it is a reflection of tarnished ideals held by the far right.
