Joseph Arpaio is a pal of Donal Trump’s, so it’s no surprise that the latter pardoned the former late last week. Both “men” shared a penchant for the divisive and politically motivated birtherism movement against President Obama.
But, it wasn’t birtherism that prompted the pardon; in the United States, and as it is the case around the world, it isn’t illegal to be stupid.
No, Arpaio was convicted of criminal contempt of court for his reckless pursuit of undocumented migrants to the United States; he showed a flagrant disregard for the Constitution of the United States when he repeatedly detained American citizens without probable cause.
Pardoning someone for violating American’s civil rights is not normal. And doing it while tens of thousands of Americans brace for a natural disaster is noting short of ghastly.
Ruben Gallego said it best: “President Trump is a coward. He waited until a Friday evening, as a hurricane hits, to pardon a racist ex-sheriff. Trump should at least have the decency to explain to the American public why he is undermining our justice system.”
Today is the 29th of August 2017; it is not a normal Tuesday.
