At a rally for GOP senator Luther Strange, Donald Trump weighed in on the controversy about professional athletes kneeling during the national anthem.
Said Trump, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!’”
This is not normal, and not just because it’s offensive language from a sitting “president”.
On the one hand, Donald Trump does not seem to recognize the importance of the First Amendment of the United States’ Constitution. That these athletes’ expression of their political will makes someone with authority, like Donald Trump, uncomfortable is precisely the reason for it’s existence.
On the other hand, Donald Trump doesn’t seem to know that taking a knee in protest is not unprecedented. Indeed, there have been many examples of American patriots taking a knee to peacefully and respectfully protest oppression. (No surprise here that Trump doesn’t know this).
Yet, to me, the most offensive part of Donald Trump’s latest idiotic remarks is that it is further aimed at dividing America, and at pandering to the remnants of his angry, fearful, and dangerous base.
This tweet says it all:
