Donald Trump visited Puerto Rico this week for what San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz called a “public-relations situation”.

Even though the mayor has been the public face of crisis, she was not invited to speak at an event with Trump; Trump instead shared the stage with other officials, and claimed he did so because they “did not play politics.”

(However, would you be surprised to learn that these same people lavished praise on Trump for his handling of the crises? You shouldn’t be.)

Of the crisis itself, Trump said Puerto Ricans should be proud that more people didn’t perish, as was the case with—in Trump’s words—a “real catastrophe” like Hurricane Katrina.

None of this is normal, but it is becoming all too familiar.

It’s Thursday, October 5, 2017.
