23 June 2017: Not a normal day.

Not only does Donald Trump believe that a “poor person” should not serve in his cabinet, he also endorses the Republican health plan which strips low income and vulnerable Americans of their health coverage.

The Senate’s healthcare bill would provide even more in the way of giveaways to the wealthiest Americans; people who already have the most comfortable—and liberal!—health care packages.

And who’ll pay for these added benefits for the rich?  Why, the same poor people who could not get a job in Trump’s cabinet, of course!

This is not normal.

TGIF. It’s June 23rd, 2017.

Scott Pruitt’s EPA has effectively shut down its Board of Scientific Councilors (BOSC).

By electing to not renew any of its current members whose terms expire in August, and by suspending all of its subcommittees’ work for the remainder of the year, the BOSC is ready for a complete makeover in 2018.

If murmurs about revamping the science advisory process to make it more industry-friendly are true, then we can only assume that science advice to the agency will be weakened.

Why?

Because the current charters of the EPA’s science advisory boards already allow, and include, membership from industry scientists.  So, I can only assume that making these boards even more “industry-friendly” is code for opening them up to weakly credentialed or ideologically driven representatives.

Indeed, Scott Openshaw from American Chemistry Council remarked that a makeover of the EPA’s scientific advisory boards would address “concerns in the past that EPA advisory boards did not include a diversity of views and therefore frequently presented a biased perspective on issues before them.”

Judging by Mr. Openshaw’s remarks, he clearly does not understand the role, nor the composition, of the EPA’s scientific advisory boards.

Moreover, Mr. Openshaw should be informed that not getting what he or the American Chemistry Council wants vis-a-vis preferential treatment from the EPA is different from the EPA providing a biased perspective.

21 June 2017: Not a normal day.

It is not a normal day in America when people who choose the path of thoughtfulness, compassion, and civility have to second guess their approach.

What does it say about America when, in the post-mortem of decision-making, one has to wonder if fear-appeals, divisiveness, and aggressive confrontation would not have been a more affective approach for garnering the support and admiration of your neighbors?

Karen Handel won in Georgia last night, and many supporters of Jon Ossoff are asking this very question.

20 June 2017: Not a normal day.

I arrived in London yesterday to the news that a white British man drove his rented van into a group of people leaving a Ramadan prayer service near Finsbury Park Mosque. One person was killed and ten people, maybe more, were injured. The attack was reportedly in retaliation for recent attacks in the United Kingdom by radicalized muslims.

Make no mistake: The van attack at Finsbury Park was an act of terrorism by a radicalized white Christian against a peaceful group of Muslims.

The attack was no less evil, nor less grotesque, than any other terrorist attack—regardless of the attackers’ race or religious persuasion—anywhere in the world.

This was Donald Trump’s Father’s Day message in 2013.

What an embarrassment.

16 June 2017: Not a normal day.

Megyn Kelly granting a prime-time interview on NBC’s flagship channel to the conspiracy theorist and hate-monger Alex Jones is not normal. And, that NBC will air the interview is beyond tasteless. It is gutless.

Alex Jones is infamous for a raft of inflammatory, derogatory, and false statements. Forget “birtherism” for a moment; his most disgusting claim by far is that the Sandy Hook mass-murder of children was a hoax perpetrated by the Obama administration.

Shame on you, Megyn Kelly, and shame on you NBC for granting this grotesque excuse for a human being a place on mainstream television.

The polarization of American society is getting out of control.

In many ways, what is happening in America in 2017 is akin to what happened in America in 1968. However, there’s a clear difference between what is happening this year, and what happened nearly 50 years ago.

Today, mindless partisanship (and, sometimes, plain old mindlessness) and the propensity to take violent action seem to be at an all-time high.

What happened yesterday in Alexandria, VA is but one example of American decay.  People around the country—from ordinary Joe’s to political elites—really must begin to pull together.

Today is Thursday, the 15th of June, 2017.

It is not a normal day.
